The Challenge

My customers had recently bought the house and wanted advice with the fencing and the “sinking” patio. Sadly both were in a very poor condition – the patio had been laid on sand, covering up 3 drains and then pointed up.

They told me that they had bought a garden “pod” which needed a base laying before construction.
They specified they wanted a garden to attract wildlife and a pond. They had brought with them come beautiful Acers in pots and a selection of garden ornaments.

Solution

We did the job in two tranches . All the fencing was ripped out and replaced with high quality hand built panels and we installed double gates for was access to the road out front.

We pulled down the rickety shed and erected the new one of their choice.

We went back 3 months later and ripped out the sinking patio and re-designed and laid a “wrap around”
patio and pathways using Marshalls Heritage stones. They want a circle of this outside the patio doors
which was very carefully lined up. I embedded black polished stones to “soften” an edge.

We dug the pond just beyond one edge of the paving area the diameter of which reflected the diameter of the base of the pod.

I raided my Builders’ Merchant’s skips for discarded roof tiles to provide a have for frogs.

After the tree surgeon had been I used the off-cuts to create a stumper in one corner which was planted up with native plants/ferns and flowers, this was stuffed with padding materials for birds to use for nesting.

The potted Acers were planted at the pond edges.

I went back earlier this year and they now have fish, frogs and birds aplenty!
